Ch5. Stop Letting Tomorrow Steal Today | Overcoming The Thief Of Time - Procrastination
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Ever notice how “I’ll start tomorrow” feels comforting for five minutes and heavy for five days? Join me as I pull back the curtain on procrastination and reveal it as an emotional regulation habit—fuelled by fear, overwhelm, and perfectionism—rather than a simple time problem. From there, I share a step by step practical, compassionate approach to starting now, so you can trade guilt and mental clutter for calm momentum and real results.
I break down the connection between perfectionism and procrastination and show how it quietly destroys self-trust. You’ll learn why clarity is created by action, and how to use aligned, values-driven steps to make progress without waiting for perfect conditions. I also dive into some timeless lessons from Brian Tracy’s book, Eat That Frog so you can turn them into simple daily moves:
- Identify your most impactful task
- Do it first
- Plan in advance
- Apply the 80-20 rule
- Break big efforts into smaller bites that feel doable.
Finally I share concrete tools you can use immediately to help you overcome “the thief of time” - Procrastination. If you’re ready to stop rehearsing life and start living it, this conversation gives you the framework and the nudge to act.
If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who’s been waiting for the right moment, and leave a quick review to help others find us. What’s the one frog you’ll eat today?

Breaking Promises To Yourself
SPEAKER_00Every time you say, I'll start tomorrow, I'll finish it tomorrow, you are breaking your promise to yourself and you reinforce the belief that you can't count on yourself. And that right there, that is what keeps you in the cycle of procrastination, guilt, stress, and
Welcome And Episode Focus
SPEAKER_00stagnation. Welcome back to the Balanced Brew, the space where we dive into topics on life, wellness, and the deeper conversations that help us grow into the best versions of ourselves. I am your host, Yolanda Chaz. As I was preparing for this episode, I took some time to analyze where in my life I have been procrastinating. Because I'm honestly not innocent. I am also guilty of procrastinating and making little excuses to avoid owning and doing the thing. As I was looking at those areas that I've been neglecting, I was reminded that tomorrow is never promised. So today we're diving deep into something we all struggle with. Something that everyone has to wrestle with throughout their journey. It's something that quietly steals our peace, our time, our potential. That thing is procrastination. Procrastination is a sneaky habit that somehow manages to constantly convince us that tomorrow is guaranteed. That we have time, so we'll start or finish that thing tomorrow. It convinces us that somehow we will have the energy, motivation, creativity, or courage we need to start or complete something any other time but now. The reality though is that our time is not guaranteed and there will never be enough time to do absolutely everything you need to do. However, you can learn to manage your time better so that you can take control of your tasks and responsibilities. Take immediate action, build momentum, and get the results you desire, leaving you feeling productive and accomplished. In today's episode, we'll talk about why we procrastinate and how it's secretly tied to perfectionism. How procrastination adds unnecessary stress and guilt. How to take aligned, inspired, and empowered action starting today, and a few powerful insights from Brian Tracy's book Eat That Frog on tackling your biggest priorities first. So get comfortable and let's get into
Why We Procrastinate Beyond Laziness
SPEAKER_00it. If we have to be honest, everyone procrastinates, and the reasons behind it aren't always about laziness. It's usually a sign of several things holding space in your mind. Sometimes it's fear, fear of failing, fear of being seen, or even fear of success. Other times it's overwhelm. Too many choices, too many unknowns, too many important decisions to make. So avoiding and delaying making one seems like the best option. But most times it's perfectionism in disguise. Telling yourself if you can't do it perfectly or have it done a certain way, you'll wait until you can. But that moment rarely comes. You end up stuck and stagnant, which quietly steals your self-trust. Every time you say, I'll start tomorrow, I'll finish it tomorrow. You are breaking your promise to yourself and you reinforce the belief that you can't count on yourself. And that right there, that is what keeps you in the cycle of procrastination, guilt, stress, and stagnation.
Stress, Open Tabs, And Emotional Avoidance
SPEAKER_00Now let's talk about how procrastination adds stress. Let's say you have a task you want to complete, you avoid doing that task and you feel better for a moment, you get that temporary relief, but then the stress starts building. Just like having 20 tabs open in your computer browser that you never close. They are going to linger in the background, and eventually they're going to slow down the performance of your computer. Just like that example. When you procrastinate, you're essentially keeping all these little tabs open in your mind. So even when you're trying to rest, your brain is running in the background. You think about what you should be doing or could have done. And that mentally drains your energy, attention, and peace. Have you ever felt so overwhelmed? You've taken a few hours or even a whole day to think about what you need to do. That is a result of prolonged procrastination. Studies have shown that procrastination isn't just a time issue, it's an emotional regulation issue. You delay the task to avoid the uncomfortable feeling that comes with it. For example, uncertainty, fear, self-doubt. But that emotional avoidance adds so much more stress than facing those uncomfortable feelings would. And the longer you delay, the bigger and heavier the task feels. The stress doesn't come from the work, it comes from waiting and delaying. But when you take action, even small aligned action, you release that tension. You start to feel lighter, more capable, and more in
Clarity Comes From Action
SPEAKER_00control. Let's get into how taking aligned and inspired action creates clarity and confidence. You don't wait for clarity to take action. You take action to gain clarity. When you start, you learn. When you learn, you get feedback. And from that feedback, you can adjust and change your approach accordingly. You learn what works, what doesn't, and what feels right. Think about it this way: every small move builds momentum and confidence. Taking aligned action doesn't mean forcing things. It's about moving in a direction that matches your values, your goals, and your truth. It means asking yourself, what's one small step I can take today that aligns with my goals and values right now? Not 10 steps, not the perfect plan. Just one small step. That's how you build a life of movement. Because momentum isn't built by giant leaps. It's built by consistent micro moves. With each small action, your confidence grows and your self-trust is built. So you need to learn to be okay with starting slow, knowing that once you're in motion, you will build unstoppable
Perfectionism’s Trap And Redefining Success
SPEAKER_00momentum. Perfectionism and procrastination feed each other. Let's take a moment to unpack this connection. Perfectionism will convince you that it has to be flawless. It has to be just right. And then procrastination will convince you to wait until you can do it perfectly. These two go hand in hand. They're pretty much your best friends, and together they unfortunately kill progress. The answer isn't lowering your standards and submitting to the procrastination and perfectionism, but redefining success. Instead of thinking I need to do it perfectly, think how can I move forward today? What's one thing I can do to get me closer to achieving my goal? Focus on progress and persistence over perfection. Perfectionism will keep you rehearsing life instead of living it. But taking action, even small and imperfect, gets you into the place where real growth happens. Now, let's talk about alignment and momentum. Aligned action is powerful because it feels intentional. When what you do is connected to why you're doing it, procrastination loses its grip. You're not just ticking boxes, you're building something that matters. So pause and ask yourself right now. What's one small aligned action I can take today that future
Aligned Action And Momentum
SPEAKER_00me will thank me for? It could be sending that email, posting that offer, recording that video, or finally starting that project that has been living rent-free in your mind. Momentum starts right now.
Eat That Frog: Core Principles
SPEAKER_00So one of my favorite books that really simplifies overcoming procrastination is Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy. I want to bring in some timeless wisdom from this book. In other words, your frog is your biggest, most important task. The one that will create the most impact if you just do it. Here are a few key takeaways that tie into what we've been talking about. Number one, identify your frog. Every day, ask yourself, what's the one task that would make the biggest difference in my life or goals if I completed it today? Whatever that is, that is your frog. Eat it first. Number two, do it first. Don't wait until you feel ready. Motivation follows action, not the other way around. The earlier you tackle your frog, the lighter your day feels. Number three, plan every day in advance. Brian Tracy reminds us that every minute spent planning saves 10 minutes in execution. So even five minutes in the morning writing down your top three priorities can dramatically shift your productivity and focus. Number four, apply the 80-20 rule. 20% of what you do produces 80% of your results. Focus on the vital few things that actually move you forward, not the busy work that just makes
Practical Tools To Start Today
SPEAKER_00you feel productive. Lastly, number five, take it one bite at a time. If the frog feels too big, break it down. You don't have to eat the whole frog in one bite. What matters is you just start eating it. What I love about Eat That Frog is how simple and practical it is. It's not about doing more, it's about doing what matters most and doing it first. When you take that approach, procrastination doesn't stand a chance. If you haven't read this book, I highly recommend you get yourself a copy and read it. Let's make this actionable. I want to share a few tools with you that you can start using today to break the cycle of waiting and start creating momentum. Number one, the 15-minute rule. Commit to just 15 minutes of any task that you want to complete. Once you start, your brain shifts from avoidance to engagement. Number two, focus on one thing. Ask yourself, what's the most important thing that I can do today that moves me closer to my goals? Number three, adopt the imperfect action mindset. Give yourself permission to launch version 1.0. You can always refine it later, but just start where you are and with what you have. Number four, focus on and visualize the reward or the after. Focus on how relieved and empowered you'll feel after you've done the thing. Number five, get an accountability partner. If you're comfortable, share your goals with someone. Saying it out loud creates follow-through. And if sharing your goals isn't your thing, then maybe try practicing and writing them down. And finally, incorporate end-of-day reflections. Every night, commit to journaling your small wins and celebrate them because small wins eventually add up to big wins. When your actions are aligned with your purpose, procrastination loses its power. You stop asking when and start saying now. You stop moving from a place of pressure and overwhelm. And you start moving from passion, purpose, and clarity. I want you to ask yourself, where in my life am I procrastinating? And what's one small aligned action I can take today that my future self
Recap And Call To Act Now
SPEAKER_00will thank me for? That right there, my friend, is where your transformation begins. Let's do a quick recap. Procrastination isn't laziness, it's an emotional regulation issue and also perfectionism in disguise. Waiting adds stress, but action builds peace, confidence, and results. You don't need perfect conditions to get started. You just need to start where you are and with what you have. And finally, the key is to eat your frog. Do the big meaningful thing first. The moment you choose action over avoidance, you shift from potential to progress. And every time you show up for yourself, you prove that you can be trusted with your own dreams. So stop waiting for the perfect time. Start when you're ready. Start today. Finish it today. Start where you are with what you have and watch how the universe meets you halfway. If today's episode resonated with you, share it with someone who needs that little push. Someone who's been waiting for the right moment, for that reminder that they're capable, ready, and enough right now. Because that moment, it's right now. Remember, action builds confidence. So take aligned action and keep showing up for the life that you're meant to live. Until next time, take care of yourself, take time for yourself, and be kind to yourself.
